Green Roofs 101 - Multi-functional community investment training program coming in September 2025
Support urban biodiversity, capture rainwater to prevent runoff, enhance energy efficiency for cooling buildings
Green Roof Infrastructure Network (GRIN) is an incorporated nonprofit under the BC Societies Act, founded to unite green roof experts and enthusiasts to promote green roofs and green infrastructure as critical components of healthy cities.
C40 report on Green and Just Recovery post-Covid, 2021 indicates "Canadian cities will be critical to delivering the transformative change needed for a low-carbon future.
Around the world, cities are already leading
on climate action and have the capacity to
deliver fundamental change in tandem with
bold national investment. Investing in an urban
green and just recovery has the power to create
more jobs, improve air quality and promote the
health of residents."
Municipalities around the world are welcome to send trainees to Canada's west coast Province, British Columbia for practical and theoretical training on green roofs. Students completing this course over three sessions will raise the bar on community functioning in multiple ways.
Green Roofs 101
Van Dusen Botanical Gardens is hosting the Green Roofs 101 course over three Saturdays in September, 9 am to 4pm on the 6th, 13th and 20th.
This GRIN course is led by Dr. Christine Thuring with expert contributors bringing a comprehensive overview of green roofs as multi-functional systems. The scope of this program extends from downtown MURBs (multi-unit residential buildings) to suburban backyard garden sheds. Green roofs support biodiversity (believe it or not, including salmon!), support pollinators, manage stormwater, insulate and protect structures, reduce urban heat island effects, and help suppress the spread of wildfires.
Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to design, install, and maintain green roofs, grounded in a solid understanding of their performance and benefits. The course delivers leading-edge information on design details, construction, and implementation based on current best practices—both industry-wide and specific to Vancouver. A combination of lectures, discussions, and collaborative project reviews is employed to advance the learning. Register here.

When: Saturdays September 6, 13, and 20, from 9:00 - 16:00 (1 hour for lunch)
