NYC winter weather advisory - icy conditions with more rain coming
URGENT Winter Weather Message issued by NWS New York 312 am EST Thurs Feb 6
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 AM THIS MORNING...
Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations 1 to locally 2 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze in portions of northeast New Jersey and southeast New York until 11 AM EST this morning. Plan on slippery road conditions. Precipitation started as snow, then changed to a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain during the morning commute. Temperatures will gradually rise above freezing changing the precip to plain rain by late morning.
Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while
driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken
on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and
slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Wyoming County: Thousands of residents in the Village and Town of Warsaw are under BWA and water conservation notice following a water main break late Monday night. According to the notice issued for the Town of Warsaw and Village of Warsaw, "The water system lost pressure due to a water transmission main break. The water storage facilities lost half the storage capacity, causing low water pressure scenarios and a brief low chlorine event." During such low pressure and/or low chlorine, there is a chance for microbiological contamination in the tap water. To sanitize water for drinking, maintain a rolling boil for one minute, until further notice.
Village of Warsaw serves 3850 residents from a surface water source in the upper Niagara River-Lake Erie watershed. Town of Warsaw is under a separate system with SDWA permit distributing potable water to 140 residents with surface water purchased from the Village. The Town SDWA non-compliance history shows 2 quarters in 2023 concerning the Revised Total Coliform Rule, the Village likewise has had two quarters of the last 12 with non-compliance, a monitoring and reporting miss in 2021 concerning fluoride, and a 2023 non-compliance with Revised Total Coliform Rule.
Chautauqua County: Village of Fredonia and Town of Pomfret customers are under a BWA following a water main break and blown pipe at the Water Treatment Plant on Monday. More to follow.

National Weather Service seeks weather observers
NWS is calling for volunteer weather observers to take the baton in Mattituck and Carmel. In addition to enthusiasm for climatology, location matters. According to Joe Pollina at NWS, "We are looking to be able to "thread" any new observers data into the observations for these former observers; meaning the new observers' data would be able to be added to the old observers' data and continue their climatology. In order for that to happen, the sites need to be climatologically compatible. This means new observers need to be within a 5 mile radius of the old sites and within 100 ft elevation. Mattituck, being on relatively flat Long Island won't have a problem with these criteria, Carmel being in the higher elevations of the Lower Hudson Valley would be more difficult to find because of the 100 ft elevation requirement and the sparser density of population up that way."
NWS seeks reliable volunteers committed to recording local temperatures, rainfall and snowfall for many years to come:
- Take daily temperature and precipitation
readings
- Instruments and training provided free of charge includes temperature sensor, 8” rain gauge, snow boards
- training provided on how to take measurements and submit the data on line
NWS seeks a complete climatological record for each site, so ideally each observer will have a backup, if possible. Pollina says, "we encourage the observers to designate a backup for when they go on vacations or for any other reasons they may have to be away for an extended period of time."
The temperature sensor has memory, storing daily data for up to 30 days. It is acceptable to record rainfall as a multi-day accumulation. If the observer is away and does not have a back up checking the gauges, high and low temps can be retrieved from the sensor and rainfall measurement can be entered as a total amount for up to a 7 day period.
