International Coastal Cleanup Day is September 20

Ocean Conservancy
Harnessing the Power of People to Fight Ocean Trash, ending the flow of trash at the source

In partnership with volunteer organizations and individuals around the globe, the International Coastal Cleanup® (ICC) engages people to remove trash from the world’s beaches and waterways. Thanks to millions of volunteers around the world, the ICC has become a beacon of hope, leading and inspiring action in support of our ocean. Since its beginning, more than 18 million volunteers have collected more than 380 million pounds of trash.

Here's what's going on through the coastal states in WaterToday US coverage areas:

California
California Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest annual volunteer event in the USA. For forty Septembers running, volunteers show up in force at their local beaches to collect and remove hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash from the third longest coastline in the country, over eight hundred miles.

From the Coastal.ca announcement, "Join the Trashure Hunt! This year, California Coastal Cleanup Day will become the world's largest scavenger hunt. Special "trash" items will be hidden at cleanup sites all across the state. If you find one of them, you can redeem it for valuable prizes!"
See the link for a map to cleanup sites, register to be included in Climate Action Counts, an effort to unite one million Californians to take everyday climate actions for collective impact.

Georgia
Georgia Coast Cleanup is an annual event organized by Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant of the University of Georgia
Boating in and enjoying coastal Georgia’s waters is such a treat—and we all share a role in keeping them healthy. Join us for the 2025 Georgia Coast Cleanup, and be a coastal steward for our marshes, beaches, and waterways. The Georgia Coast Cleanup will kick-off on Saturday, September 20, which is International Coastal Cleanup Day, and conclude on Saturday, October 4.

Marine debris negatively impacts both our environment and economy, costing coastal communities millions each year in cleanup efforts and lost tourism. By pitching in, you’ll help ensure healthy marshes, beautiful shorelines, and great fishing for years to come. Registration is virtual. Cleanups can be conducted anywhere along Georgia's coast; gear and support materials will be available at Dunbar Yachts
on St. Simons Island. Cleanups should be completed by October 4, 2025.

Lake Lanier is Georgia's largest freshwater lake with nearly 700 miles of shoreline to be combed and cleared of trash on Shoreline Sweep Day. The water in Lake Lanier comes the Blue Ridge Mountains, from rain collected in creeks and streams, tumbling over waterfalls to the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers, the Buford Dam collects the flow in Lake Lanier.

Lake Lanier Association’s 37th annual Shore Sweep will take place on Saturday, September 20th, 8am - 1pm.
Volunteers assemble to clean up the lake for the benefit of cleaner water, and a garbage-free habitat for creatures great and small.

This event, hosted by the Lake Lanier Association (LLA) is the largest volunteer clean-up in Georgia! Last year, over 1,200 volunteers removed 85 tons of trash from Lanier’s shoreline. This year's cleanup will take place at 15 locations around Lake Lanier with 8 Advanced Sites in action already. make plans to join us in giving Lake Lanier some much needed love!

The American Littoral Society organizes the annual event, marking four decades of coastal sweeps. "No other program in New York does more to improve both the coastal environment and the human behavior that impacts it. Our goal is to increase participation in this program and our collective ability to positively impact the shorelines and waterways of New York. Please consider joining a cleanup at a location near you or become a beach captain and organize a new cleanup in your own community!"
