WaterToday Announces a Strategic Media Collaboration with Tijuana Press to Expand its Water coverage in Mexico.
Ottawa, Ontario — February 11, 2026— WaterToday, an independent online media dedicated to covering water in three countries, Canada, the US and Mexico, is delighted to announce a new strategic collaboration with Tijuana Press - a leading independent Mexican news organization headed by Vicente Calderón - with the aim of expanding its water storytelling in Mexico.
Leveraging WaterToday’s comprehensive knowledge of water issues and Tijuana Press’s investigative expertise and deep connections, the collaboration will launch its first joint initiative on March 2, 2026.
"By combining our water knowledge and Tijuana Press’s expertise, we are creating a powerful engine to increase the awareness of threats to our water around the world " said Josée Dechêne, Publisher of WaterToday, “ Bureau Chief Vicente Calderón shares our commitment to water, journalistic integrity and dedication to training young reporters, making him the ideal Bureau Chief for this next chapter."
Vicente Calderón, Editor of Tijuana Press added: "This partnership allows us to bring critical water stories to both English and Spanish-speaking audiences across North America. Tijuana's experience with water scarcity and infrastructure challenges offers vital lessons for border communities and arid regions worldwide, especially in the face of Climate Change"
In the wake of a recent Colorado River ruptured pipeline, our first collaboration will focus on understanding adaptation to chronic infrastructure failure in Tijuana. The ruptured pipeline over 200 km away caused significant disruption - schools canceled classes, businesses closed or limited operations, and residents exhausted their stored water supplies - yet the public reaction was remarkably subdued.
What does this quiet acceptance reveal about life on this border? How have years of intermittent service conditioned residents to normalize what would elsewhere lead to protests or demonstrations? And what are the long-term implications when a community's baseline expectation is scarcity?
The recent outage offers a window into a larger, ongoing story about infrastructure vulnerability, government accountability, and civic engagement in one of Mexico's most dynamic border cities.
WT US Bureau Chief, Gillian Ward said, “The addition of WTMX.mx Bureau with Mr. Calderon’s experience and front-line vantage point completes the continental water news circuit. The joint initiative with TijuanaPress allows us to reach the impacted public with high value, current information about their drinking water supplies. We welcome Mr. Calderon to our water newsroom and look forward to greater water security for all, regardless of means.”
