Floods and streamflow update from USGS WaterWatch
Current streamflows in New York State Monday morning are much above normal to high with a dozen locations statewide returning 99th percentile flow values. Long Island has four stations reporting the 99th percentile extreme high flows Monday morning, including Mill Neck, Cold Spring Harbor, Freeport and Valley Stream. No flooding is presently occurring at any USGS-monitored locations as of the afternoon update. Much above normal to high flows are lighting up the streamflow map through the northeast and central drainage basin, with the southbound Atlantic systems Susquehanna, Delaware and Ramapo experiencing much above normal to high flow values after rain yesterday.
The western watersheds are mostly above normal with the exception of Genesee River, still posting some below normal values. Rain continues through Oneida and Onondaga, Madison in the Mohawk River watershed, streamflow monitors will be tracked for changes. More to follow.
None of the monitors are registering extreme low 1st percentile flow volume readings Monday afternoon.
See the FLOOD button to the right of the map for details on the high and low flows recorded on the USGS network of streamflow gages through the state.
Drought map from USGS WaterWatch
As of Monday afternoon, the New York drought map is still empty, indicating no surface area of NYS is rated below the seasonal normal streamflow value, based on 7-day running average current flows. The drought map remains blank as we watch a dozen extreme high flowing stations for possible flooding. More to follow.
Drinking Water Advisories
Fort Edward drinking water authorities issued a boil water advisory following a water main break on Saturday. The outage and subsequent BWA impacts customers connecting on Marion Street from Mechanic Street to Ridge Street until further notice.
Hazardous Spills the latest reports released from NY DEC as reported to the NY Emergency Spill Hotline 1-800-457-7362
The latest spill records uploaded for review were reported and or occurred on Thursday, December 7.
A traffic accident at JFK Airport is listed as the cause for a costly and damaging spill of jet fuel on Thursday last week. Local news reported the overturned tanker lost 10 thousand gallons of fuel; we have since learned from the official report filed with NY DEC the spill amount entered is 5000 gallons. The response crew used foam to control the spill and prevent ignition of the fumes. No impact to water is reported in the incident notes. The firefighting foam is often listed as a spill incident itself, we will look for more details on the cleanup and how much AFFF was deployed to control this situation. More to follow.
See the Spills button to the right of the map for more spill incidents reported in NYS over the last week.
