Hudson River flooding ends
Water news for Friday, January 26, 2024 - last updated 713 pm EST
Streamflow Situation from USGS WaterWatch
Hudson River is no longer flooding near Poughkeepsie, the tidal estuary is back to 1.87 feet deep, flood stage is 4.2 ft. Note the Hudson River collects rainfall and runoff from 11,833 square miles of upstate NY, delivering up to 60 thousand cubic feet per second to Long Island Sound.
West Canada Creek came within an inch of flooding this morning at Kast Bridge, peaked and turned around, picked up a bit over the afternoon however not looking like a flood risk today. Onondaga Creek passed action stage at Dorwin Avenue in Syracuse, peaked and started to decline as rapidly as it rose. Tonawanda Creek peaked at action stage and is on the declining trend at Attica, still flowing 99th percentile but not looking like it will spill over its channel. Genesee River in action stage, has hit peak flow and turned the tap down at Wellsville, averting the flood alarms there. With a light drizzle at Binghamton and no heavy rain, most interior channels seem to be handling the water volume today. More to follow.
During the update here, Owasco Inlet tucked in below flood stage below Aurora Street in Moravia. Flooding started at 630 am and has ended around 2 pm this afternoon.
Rain and warmer temperatures have melted the ice off Susquehanna River and tributaries in the south, now flowing above 99th percentile. Dozens of tributaries in Finger Lakes, Niagara-Lake Erie and Genesee River watersheds flow at 99th percentile levels Friday evening.
South and west flowing waterways are heading upward, above 95th percentile as of Friday morning, as are the rivers and tributaries flowing south to the Atlantic. So far no extreme high flow or flooding recorded on USGS gauges around Manhattan or Long Island. More to follow.
Be extra cautious around fast moving water, streamflows are rising.
Owasco Inlet breached minor flood stage at 630 am and rising rapidly appraoching moderate flood stage below Aurora St at Moravia. Dozens of stations recording 99th percentile, up to 100 stations above 90th percentile. Flood and high flow updates are underway, see black and blue tags on the map on the right. More to follow.
Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
Allegheny River watershed appears below normal today, even while streamflows in the interior NYS are suddenly spiking. Drought ratings are based on the previous 7 days average streamflow level, so sudden high flows will cause the rating to shift over the course of a day or two. Lower Genesee River watershed is still rated below normal as of this update, including Livingston, Ontario and part of Monroe County. Lake Ontario minor tributaries west watershed is off the drought map Friday.
