Tonawanda Creek still flooding at Rapids
Eyes on Hornell, Canacadea Creek and Canisteo River flowing high

Water news for Sunday, January 28, 2024 - last updated 1150 pm EST

Streamflow Situation from USGS WaterWatch
Flood watch overnight for Hornell as Canacadea Creek and Canisteo River are both running at 99th percentile. As of this update, Canacadea Creek is not actively rising, Canisteo River has been up and down, appears to have peaked just shy of action stage. Given the confluence of these water bodies occurs in the town, locals are watching closely in case the flow spikes upward again.

Tonawanda Creek breached flood stage at noon today, it is still flooding at Rapids, running almost a foot over minor flood stage and rising toward moderate flood stage.

Hudson River tidal estuary is no longer flooding at Poughkeepsie.

Black Creek is still running 99th percentile at Churchville, the flow level there subsided below flood stage around 445 am this morning, still receding.

Be extra cautious around fast moving water, stay well back from creekbanks as streamflows are still rising in some locations in the west.

Check the map for flow volume and depth updates throughout the day, SMS alerts have gone out for stations looking to breach flood stage or actively flooding. Black tags for flood, blue for 99th percentile flow are updated with flow levels throughout the day.

Light to moderate snowfall is expected this afternoon and evening. There is the potential for a few inches of heavy, wet snow, especially in the higher elevations. Snow may cause some slick spots.
