Drinking Water Matters Remembering East Palestine, Ohio hazardous materials spill and fire Feb 3, 2023
New York State enjoys some of the highest quality drinking water in the USA. Mountain stream-fed surface water collects in reservoirs for a majority of New Yorkers. Surface water is vulnerable to contamination by spills impacting waterways. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is the federal legislation that sets out the requirements for the handling of hazardous materials. The RCRA, when followed to the letter, is intended to guard the safety of the population and environment. Hazardous materials handlers are governed by the RCRA for the handling, transport and storage registered toxic materials. Violations of the RCRA Act are investigated by federal EPA in cooperation with State authorities. EPA Region 2 New York is invited to contribute to the discussion on NYS hazardous materials permit holders' compliance with the RCRA and efforts to increase awaresness of spill prevention and pollution control. To contribute to the discussion, email gillian@wtny.us. More to follow.
