Wastewater corp, operators convicted for failing to monitor and report discharges to Amite River
Four privately owned sewage treatment plants and two wastewater operators in Livingston Parish were charged and pled guilty to violating the Clean Water Act. Over a period of more than two years from 2000 to 2002 the federal district court found on information provided by EPA investigators that the wastewater company did not monitor and report wastewater discharges as required by the National Pollutant Discharge and Elimination System permit. The unmonitored discharges were released into the Amite River in east Louisiana.
The principal defendant, corporation owning the wastewater treatment plants was sentenced to a federal fine of $250,000 and a restitution payment of $14,000. Two wastewater operating corporations and two individual defendants were sentenced to pay fines of $25,000 and restitution of $2,500 each.
