Environmental Crimes Historic Conviction:  Fiscal Year 1998; Case ID# CR_768(Ohio)
Dumped buckets of acid down the sink to save on disposal fees

One of 56 Criminal Prosecutions in Ohio under the Clean Water Act (from 1989-2021)
The defendant in this case was charged and pled guilty to violation of the Clean Water Act on admission of dumping buckets of electro-plating process wastewater into the public septic system.

The defendant was sentenced to six months home confinement and a federal fine of $5000 in this 1998 case, for intentionally discharging acidic wastewater containing the hazardous heavy metal chromium. The defendant understood the requirement to treat this wastewater stream prior to discharge, however made the choice to dump the material directly to the local wastewater treatment facility in order to avoid the cost of the pre-treatment required by the National Pollutant discharge and elimination permit.

Federal fines: $5000; Home Confinement: 6 months

CWA CrimeBox briefs are compiled from EPA Criminal Enforcement records.
