Streamflow Situation from USGS current streamflow monitors in NYS
Much above seasonal normal flows registering in two locations on Long Island Wednesday including Swan River at East Patchogue and Mill Neck Creek at Mill Neck. Central basin's Mohawk River watershed and Lower Hudson watershed recording mostly normal flows, each records one tributary above normal. This data is provisional, see USGS Provisional Data statement below.

West NYS Niagara River - Lake Erie watershed continues to see Tonawanda Creek much below seasonal normal, by Wednesday the Attica station flow has stepped up to below normal with downstream Batavia and Rapids stations seeing the much below normal ratings. Lower Genesee River tributaries Oatka Creek and Conesus Creek remain much below normal, along with Lake Ontario minor tributaries west section, Black Creek, also much below seasonal normal flow level midweek.

Northeast watersheds are recovering seasonal normal to above normal, including the Oswegatchie River, running normal today. Flows are normal across the south from the Ohio-Mississippi basin Allegheny watershed to the Delaware River watershed. Ramapo River watershed is seeing some above normal values Wednesday.

Tracking with the United States Geological Survey USGS Water Science Center
Advancements in remote sensing technology for water flow volume and depth is changing the way we receive water information. Local emergency response, the National Weather Service, National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration, US Department of Homeland Security, FEMA, private industry, media and the public have access to high level information about flood, drought, wildfire risk thanks to the combination of developments continually expanding and improving sensors, remote broadcasting, satellite imaging technology and data processing capacity.

WaterToday Media Group brings a synopsis of the daily streamflows and drought map for New York State, based on provisional data from the network managed by USGS Water Science Center. The provisional data statement is given below, this work is for information purposes and should be verified with local observation to determine safety measures or significant investments.

Drought Map USGS 7-day average streamflow against seasonal average
Niagara River - Lake Erie watershed is back on the drought map in its entirety Wednesday. Adjacent Lower Genesee River watershed remains at the below normal rating even as much below normal streamflows are recorded several days running. Expecting this drought rating to escalate to moderate before this week is out.

Oswegatchie River channel through St. Lawrence County remains on the drought map at the moderate drought category Wednesday while the current streamflow picture has shifted to seasonal normal overnight. As the drought map is derived from a 7-day running average of current streamflow levels, it will take a day or two to show the increase in streamflow on the drought ratings. More to follow.
