Environmental Crimes Historic Conviction: Fiscal Year 1999; Case ID# CR_826(Ohio)
Cleveland electro-plater ignores a cease and desist order, discharges chromium water to public WWTP
One of 56 Criminal Prosecutions in Ohio under the Clean Water Act (from 1989-2021)
The defendants in this case are a Cleveland-based chrome electroplating company and the maintenance worker on payroll. Corporate and individual defendants entered guilty pleas in response to charges of violation of the Clean Water Act. The defendants were sentenced for negligent discharge of pollutants to a public sewer system in 1999.
A bill of information presented to the federal district court in Ohio demonstrated that the electroplating company maintenance worker had set up piping through a hole in the wall of the business, running untreated industrial process water to a floor sewer drain in the vacant building next door.
Prior to the federal criminal conviction, the electroplating company had been served with a cease and desist order from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.
Federal fines: $15000; Community projects: $250; Probation: 24 months
