Spill incidents reported to NY Department of Environmental Conservation

EPA recently announced the release of the 2022 Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis with positive news.
Toxic chemical releases have declined 21% in 10 years according to new TRI data.
From the announcement received March 21, 2024, "environmental releases of TRI chemicals from facilities covered by the program were 21% lower in 2022 compared to 2013. This includes a 26% decrease in air releases. During this 10-year period, releases from manufacturing facilities decreased by 9% while the value added to the U.S. economy from manufacturing increased by 14%. While overall releases increased by 1% from 2021 to 2022, there was a 6.5% increase in the number of pollution prevention activities reported under the TRI Program compared to 2021."
Hazardous spills reported this week in NYS
The latest spill reports from NYDEC occurred on Thursday, March 21. There are 25 spills reported on this date. 23 petroleum and 2 toxic.
80 gallons of diesel reported spilled from Penske Truck Rental due to equipment failure on Colfax St in Rochester.
84 gallons of wastewater reported spilled from a natural gas drill due to equipment failure on Hibbard Rd in Big Flats.
40 gallons of bentonite reported spilled from CP Railroad due to human error on Old State Rd in Whitehall.

DEC receives upward of sixteen thousand spill reports each year; each report is investigated by qualified personnel. Report files are closed when it is determined the spill is contained and under the control of the spiller or state authorities and a clean up plan is in place or completed.
