Hazardous material spill in Susquehanna Watershed

Spill incidents reported to NY Department of Environmental Conservation

For the week of May 27 - June 2, 2024 updated May 31 855 am EDT

The latest spill reports from NYDEC occurred on Saturday, May 25. Seven spills were reported on this day.

Mohawk River watershed: An unspecified amount of unknown material was released from a church off of Washington Ave in Cobleskill, within Schoharie County. A petroleum spill was reported on this day on Grand St in Cobleskill of Schoharie County. The cause of the spill and the amount has not been reported.

Atlantic Long Island Sound Watershed: Paint has been spilled at a private residence on the 200 block of Place Rd in Queens Village, in Queens County. The amount spilled is unknown at this time. Newton Creek has been impacted by unreported amounts of an unnamed material being released between 57th Ave and Center Blvd in Long Island City, Queens County.

Upper Hudson watershed: A combined total of 6000 gallons of waste fluid has reportedly been discharged from the Washington Correctional due to equipment failure on Lock 11 Lane in Comstock, in Washington County.

Lower Hudson watershed: A traffic accident resulting in the damage of a tractor trailer saddle tank released unknown amounts of diesel onto the I-87 North in Plattekill, in Ulster County.

DEC receives upward of sixteen thousand spill reports each year; each report is investigated by qualified personnel.  Report files are closed when it is determined the spill is contained and under the control of the spiller or state authorities and a clean up plan is in place or completed.
