Extreme drought in the northwest

June 25, 2024 845 am EDT

Current Streamflow Situationfrom the network of USGS streamflow gauges in NYS
Northeast streamflows remain much above normal Tuesday with above normal streamflow levels carrying on down into the central basin at Mohawk and Upper Hudson watersheds. West interior flows are recording mostly normal levels becoming lower toward the Great Lakes shorelines. South facing watersheds are running some below normal levels, including Allegheny and Ramapo Rivers, one below normal flow has popped up on Long Island overnight.

The highest flows Tuesday are in the Black River and Lake Champlain watersheds, running above 90th percentile. The lowest flows Tuesday being the northwest, Lake Ontario minor tributaries west and Niagara River - Lake Erie watershed each with a site recording 2nd percentile. As of this reporting, there are no active floods, no 99th percentile extreme high flows or 1st percentile extreme low flows in our reference network.

On the drought map depicts the above description of streamflows, Lake Ontario minor tributaries west section has escalated to extreme drought, adjacent Niagara River - Lake Erie watershed is rated below normal.

From The Sensors provisional data on river flooding from the network of USGS streamflow monitors

Seventy-four streamflow gauges indicate flooding in the USA Tuesday, down from seventy-six Monday. The majority of these floods are recorded in the midwest states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota. Within the WT coverage area of New York, Ohio, Georgia and Louisiana, one last location records flow above flood stage, that being on Sabine River in Louisiana.

Louisiana: Region 1 Bayou Bodcau Lake flooding ended Monday, leaving Sabine River monitors near Ruliff the last in the network to record flood values. This latest round of flooding started on June 4, appears to be wrapping up in the next day or two. For water level at the flood site, see the black tag indicating flood flow volume and gauge height updated daily here.

Drinking Water Advisories
Seneca Falls came under a BWA Friday following repair of a water main. The BWA impacted those customers connecting north of the canal, extending west to Rumsey Street. Seneca Falls WTP operates with permit NY4901198, serves a population of 9400 residential customers from a surface water source in Cayuga Lake. The Town of Seneca Falls operates with permit NY490011, the 2023 Annual Water Quality report states 9000 served from a raw water intake in Cayuga Lake, 25 feet below the surface. As Cayuga Lake is noted with active HAB reports, WT will track microcystins test results here. More to follow.

As many drinking water facilities are supplied from surface water reservoirs, the streamflow situation is pertinent to both drinking water supply and quality. High flows can stir up sediment and cause turbidity in the reservoirs, requiring additional treatments to render the water potable. Low flow volume is linked to warmer temperatures in the reservoir and can be an issue for water quality where HABs are present. WT tracks streamflow trends with an eye to the impacts on drinking water supply and quality in each of the state's watersheds. Check the watershed layer on the map to see the direction of flow and streamflows that may be impacting drinking water today.

USGS Provisional Data Statement
Data are provisional and subject to revision until they have been thoroughly reviewed and received final approval. Current condition data relayed by satellite or other telemetry are automatically screened to not display improbable values until they can be verified.
Provisional data may be inaccurate due to instrument malfunctions or physical changes at the measurement site. Subsequent review based on field inspections and measurements may result in significant revisions to the data.
Data users are cautioned to consider carefully the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business that involves substantial monetary or operational consequences. Information concerning the accuracy and appropriate uses of these data or concerning other hydrologic data may be obtained from the USGS.
