For the week of August 19th - 25th , 2024 updated Aug 23 937 am EDT

The latest spill reports from NYDEC occurred on Monday, August 19. 31 spills were reported on this day.

Atlantic Long Island Sound Watershed: On August 19th, unreported amounts of petroleum was released following a storm on NY25 in Smithtown, Suffolk County. This spill has reached the Nissequogue River. On August 19th, unreported amounts of raw sewage was released during a storm on Main St, in Stony Brook - Suffolk

Lower Hudson Watershed: On August 19th, an unreported amount of an unknown material was released from a vessel following a storm, and released into Hudson River off Fiero Rd in Malden, Ulster County. Again, on this day, human sewage was released from a private residence on Gedney Hill Rd in New Baltimore, Greene County.

Oswego Watershed: On August 19th, unknown amounts of sewage have been discharged from a private residence along Fikes Rd in Memphis, Onondaga County. As well as a combination of gasoline and motor oil was released at Skaneateles Country Club in Onondaga County.

Earlier this week

Lower Hudson Watershed: On August 18th, 1100 gallons of hydrofluoric acid was released from a chemical bulk storage facility on Route 52 in Hopewell Junction, Dutchess County.

Lower Hudson Watershed: On August 15th, unreported amounts of perfluorooctanoic acid was released at Lovett Coal Landfill on Elm Ave has flowed into Hudson River in Tompkins Cove, Rockland County. Raw sewage has been discharged from a private residence on Ridgebury Hill Rd, in unknown amounts in Slate Hill, Orange County. This has impacted Catlin Creek. Lastly, on August 15th, unreported amounts of petroleum was released from a vehicle into Minidceongo Creek on Samsondale Ave in West Haverstraw, Rockland County.

Lake Champlain Watershed: On August 15th, a vessel on Lake Champlain had a release of vegetable oil due to an equipment failure on board, South of the Marina in Rouses Point, Clinton County.

Niagara River Lake Erie Watershed: August 15th, unreported amounts of an unknown material was released into an unnamed stream on Norman Way in Lackawanna, Erie County.

DEC receives upward of sixteen thousand spill reports each year; each report is investigated by qualified personnel.  Report files are closed when it is determined the spill is contained and under the control of the spiller or state authorities and a clean up plan is in place or completed.
