Coastal Hazards - Rip Current from the National Weather Service
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) delivers daily climate and weather information, including the Surf Zone Forecast. Daily sky condition, precipitation, visibility, air temperature, wind speed and direction, wave height, surf temperature, tide information, rip currents, lightning, severe thunderstorms, and the ultraviolet index are commonly included in this package, essential for beach-goers.
The Rip Current Outlook is a forecast of expected rip current conditions. Colored flags posted on surf beaches are the estimation of and expectation of local beach patrol, lifeguards, or local law enforcement officials having taken into consideration the details mentioned above, along with conditions on the ground. These colored flags refer to actual, current surf zone hazards.
