Streamflows way up in the west, showers in the forecast for NYC
Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in New York State
Showers in the forecast for the city and Long Island Saturday expected to raise streamflows in Lower Hudson and Atlantic - Long Island Sound. No flooding expected, watch for blue tags to appear on the map to the right if the streamflows rise to 99th percentile. More to follow.
Relief has come for the parched northwest Saturday morning, streamflows now running much above seasonal normal with a handful of locations posting record high flows for this date in water recording history. The highest flows are occurring in Chemung, Genesee, Niagara River Lake Erie and Lake Ontario minor tributaries west. The west has been much below seasonal normal the last weeks, producing severe drought conditions through Niagara, Orleans and Monroe Counties. The refreshing of the creeks and streams overnight has not yet moved the needle on the 7-day average flow so as to relieve the drought conditions entirely, Lake Ontario west watershed is still rated severely dry.
predominantly normal to above normal statewide with a dozen stations coming in below normal to much below normal in the west and Lower Hudson River watershed. Moderate drought has come on at Lake Ontario minor tributaries west section, Niagara, Orleans and Monroe Counties. Putnam and Westchester County in the Lower Hudson River watershed are rated below normal on the drought map today.
