Summit Lake confirmed with first bluegreen of the season
Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges
New York skies are mostly clear today with patchy fog expected tonight, no hazardous weather in the forecast. Streamflows continue to run normal to above seasonal normal statewide heading into the weekend. Moderate drought rating is again applied to the Lower Hudson River watershed at Putnam and Westchester Counties as Croton River flows have been rated low, 3rd percentile for more than a week. This data is provisional and will be confirmed the streamflow monitors are making correct readings. As of this report, there are no extreme high or low flows recorded in the network.

The latest satellite image of Lake Champlain was captured September 12, this image is completely cloud obscured. The prior image from September 11 is clear, here we see the bloom in St Albans Bay matching the concentration color scale for 800 thousand cells per ml. The northeast water has been HAB free since the end of August. See the NCCOS color image of Lake Champlain here.
Two hundred HABs are confirmed active Friday morning, down from 209 yesterday. A first HAB of the season is confirmed for Summit Lake in Washington County. It is interesting that the level of HAB activity today during the tail end of the season is well beyond the peak of last year's season. The number of HAB reports archived in 2024 is approaching the total HABs reported for the entire 2023 season. Black Lake is back on the HAB radar with a second round of bluegreen growth confirmed in St Lawrence County. The latest impacted water body list is available here.
