Catskill water main break Friday has customers on Broome Street boiling water, possibly until midweek

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Greene County: Catskill came under a BWA Friday following a water main break resulting in a BWA for residents on Broome Street. The order was to extend through the weekend, as of Monday the order is still active. According to Catskill Public Works staff, today's bacteriological sampling has been completed. The the system requires two consecutive daily samples test clear of contaminants before the advisory will be rescinded, this could happen by Wednesday, more to follow.

From the Catskill Water System Annual Water Quality Report 2023, the system serves approximately 8000 people through 2270 connections. Raw water is sourced from Potic Reservoir, collecting surface water from an area approximately fourteen square miles around the Town of Coxsackie in the Lower Hudson River watershed. The finished water produced by Catskill Water met all state water quality regulations, however some homes are experiencing lead levels at the tap above safe standard. A check of the NYS HABs notifications shows no HAB activity in the Potic Reservoir in 2024.

Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in New York
Streamflows in the Upper Hudson River run much below normal Monday as the daily releases from the dams maintain the water levels in the 3rd percentile, the third lowest reading out of one hundred measurements taken on this day in water recording history. The rated flow monitoring station at North Creek has been recording flow volume for 116 years. Below normal flows in the tributaries of the Upper Hudson are rated below normal, the Mohawk River recorded much below seasonal normal at Waterford.

The change in streamflows has not yet registered on the 7-day average so as to change the drought map. Moderate drought hangs on the Lower Hudson watershed at Putnam and Westchester, yesterday impacting the north of Orange County as well. Upper Hudson River watershed Essex, Hamilton and Warren Counties remain below normal. Lake Ontario minor tributaries west watershed again rated below normal through Niagara, Orleans and west Monroe Counties. As of this report, there are no extreme high flows or floods, and no first percentile low flows recorded in the network.

WT HAB Tracker
from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS), Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) and State sources where available

New York
Two hundred and sixty-one HABs appear on the notifications board Monday morning, down from 274 yesterday. Beaverdam Lake is back on with a cluster of new bluegreen reports confirmed on the weekend. Drinking water reservoirs are becoming HAB active again as observed in September last season. Swinging Bridge Reservoir HAB is back, Alcove Reservoir and Basic Creek Reservoir each tagged with three confirmed HABs. A first HAB of the season was confirmed this weekend for Upper Chateaugay Lake in Clinton County. The latest impacted water body list is available here.

The latest satellite image of Lake Champlain was captured September 15, this image is mostly clear, captured at unknown wind speed. Wind speed above 4 mph can cause the subject phytoplankton, the visible correlate to the bluegreen algae to disappear beneath the surface where it is not detected by the satellite imaging equipment. Baie Missisquoi HAB is visible as a thin band along the northeast shore with three small open water HABs at the center of the bay around the international border, 600 to 700 thousand cells per ml concentration. St Albans Bay HAB appears as small localized mats along the north shore, again 600 to 700 thousand cells per ml. Lake Carmi shows widespread HAB activity in the north half, 600 to 700 thousand cells per ml. The widespread HAB detected in the previous capture between Isle la Motte and Alburg Dunes State Park is not accessible in the recent image. From the Sept 14 image we noted small open water HABs of moderate concentration 200 thousand cells per ml down south of St Albans Bay past Grand Isle and South Hero Island. See the NCCOS color image of Lake Champlain here.
