Potential for rip currents today

Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in New York
A risk for rip currents off the south beaches of Long Island today as a new tropical storm takes shape. Much below seasonal flow levels persist through west interior into the north Adirondacks Tuesday with normal streamflows in the south. The moderate drought rating on Putnam and Westchester Counties has stepped back to a below normal rating. A new drought rating has come on for the Niagara Lake Erie watershed at the top of Cattaraugus County, rated below normal today. Upper Hudson River watershed remains below normal through Essex, Hamilton and Warren Counties, along with Lake Ontario minor tributaries west watershed again rated below normal through Niagara, Orleans and west Monroe Counties. Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Greene County: Catskill came under a BWA Friday following a water main break resulting in a BWA for residents on Broome Street. The order was to extend through the weekend, as of Monday the order is still active. According to Catskill Public Works staff, today's bacteriological sampling has been completed. The the system requires two consecutive daily samples test clear of contaminants before the advisory will be rescinded, this could happen by Wednesday, more to follow.

From the Catskill Water System Annual Water Quality Report 2023, the system serves approximately 8000 people through 2270 connections. Raw water is sourced from Potic Reservoir, collecting surface water from an area approximately fourteen square miles around the Town of Coxsackie in the Lower Hudson River watershed. The finished water produced by Catskill Water met all state water quality regulations, however some homes are experiencing lead levels at the tap above safe standard. A check of the NYS HABs notifications shows no HAB activity in the Potic Reservoir in 2024.

New York
Two hundred and sixty-one HABs were racked up on the notifications board Monday, down from 274 on Sunday. Beaverdam Lake came roaring back on our radar with a cluster of new bluegreen reports confirmed over the weekend. Drinking water reservoirs are bluegreen active again, including Swinging Bridge Reservoir, Alcove Reservoir and Basic Creek Reservoir. A first HAB of the season was confirmed this weekend for Upper Chateaugay Lake in Clinton County. The latest impacted water body list is available here.

The latest satellite image of Lake Champlain was captured September 16, this image is mostly clear, no wind speed information available. Wind speed above 4 mph can cause the subject phytoplankton, the visible correlate to the bluegreen algae, to disappear beneath the surface where it is not detected by the satellite imaging equipment. Baie Missisquoi HAB is visible again in this image as a narrow band up along the northeast shore in Canada, a hot spot has come on, over 1 million cells per ml. St Albans Bay HAB appears in the inside of the bay along shore, a small localized bloom at 600 to 700 thousand cells per ml.

See the NCCOS color image of Lake Champlain here.
