Could this be the peak of bluegreen season in New York?

WT HAB Tracker from the satellite monitoring program of the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science(NCCOS), Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) and State sources where available

New York
A new daily high activity was reached yesterday, 463 active HAB reports on the notifications board to start the first full week of fall. Considering the daily high activity in 2023 season was below 150 confirmed reports, the entire season 2023 had less than 1200 reports. Finger Lakes continue to bear the brunt of the bluegreen load in 2024. Seneca Lake, thirty-eight miles long with half the freshwater volume in the west interior, currently hosts 109 active HABs, Canandaigua Lake currently posted with 93 HABs, Skaneateles Lake with 63, Cayuga Lake with 24 blooms. The latest impacted water body list is available here.

The latest satellite image of Lake Champlain was captured September 22, another partially clear image taken at unknown surface wind speed. Baie Missisquoi is populated with a loosely dispersed open water HAB mass of low concentration, 100 thousand cells per ml or less. The open water HABs are observed in the channel west of North Hero Island, also at the low concentration. The rest of the lake is cloud obscured in this image. A prior image taken on September 20 showed HABs extending past Alburg-Swanton bridge beyond North Hero Island to the channel between Grand Isle and St Albans Bay at moderate concentration around 300 thousand cells per ml.

See the NCCOS color image of Lake Champlain here.

Streamflow Situation from the USGS network of streamflow gauges in New York
Normal to above seasonal normal water levels in the north and south watersheds Tuesday. West interior and central drainage basins continue to run normal to much below seasonal normal. Check the map to the right for brown tags blue tags indicating 1st percentile low flows. Rondout Creek remains at extreme low, a record low level for this date in the 87 year history of the monitoring site at Lowes Corners.

The drought map appears much the same as reported here yesterday with the addition of another moderate drought rating at the lower end of Owego River in Oswego County. The west interior Finger Lakes region remains below normal, Black River and Upper Hudson River watersheds remains below normal. Lake Ontario minor tributaries west section in Niagara, Orleans and west Monroe Counties remains in moderate drought. Niagara River - Lake Erie watershed, Allegheny River watershed have surface area rated below normal.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
