Severe drought in the northwest
Streamflow Situationfrom the USGS network of streamflow gauges in New York
Overcast this morning with 50% chance of showers this evening in New York City. Northwest Lake Ontario minor tributaries watershed has escalated to severe drought overnight. Streamflow gauges have increased overnight, predominantly above seasonal normal statewide. As of this report, there are no extreme highs or lows in the reference network.

Four hundred and seven HABs confirmed on the notifications board Friday. Otsego Lake is back on the impacted water bodies list with a single localized HAB confirmed off the west shore near Leatherstocking Golf Course. Owasco Lake has had a resurgence of bluegreen growth, 33 active blooms. Kellis Pond is seeing the first HAB of the season, along with Old Town Pond in Suffolk County. Finger Lakes continue to host the majority of these bluegreen colonies. The top three lakes, Seneca, Canandaigua and Skaneateles Lakes hold over 60% of the HABs today. The latest satellite image of Lake Champlain was captured September 24, a partially cloud obscured image captured at unknown surface wind speed. Baie Missisquoi shows dispersed open water HABs of low concentration, 100 thousand cells per ml or less. Lake Carmi widespread HAB 600 thousand cells per ml. A previous image capture dated September 23 shows dispersed open water HABs around the Alburg-Swanton bridge and in the channel west of North Hero Island, also at the low concentration. The rest of the lake is cloud obscured.
