Bluegreen monitoring season winding down in NYS while first of the season reports are still coming in
WT HAB Tracker from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science early detection program, NYS DEC HABs Notifications
Swan Lake is one of the latest in season cases to be confirmed in NYS, the first HAB confirmed in this Westchester water body reported five days ago. Otisco Lake is back on the active HAB list with 2 locations in bloom this late in the season. Thirty-two HABs remain throughout NYS, 13 of these are in a single Orange County water body struggling with drought, Beaver Dam Lake. Canandaigua Lake of the Finger Lakes is hosting eight active blooms. All reports more than two weeks old are automatically archived, the season count for 2024 sits at 2103 aged reports and 32 active blooms. This eclipses last year's season with less than 1200 bluegreen mats confirmed statewide.
