Coastal flooding is ongoing for south beaches of Long Island, including Jamaica Bay flooding at Inwood, East Rockaway Inlet flooding at Atlantic Beach and Shinnecock Bay flooding at Ponquoogue. Hudson River is no longer flooding at Piermont.

RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM THIS MORNING TO 6 PM EST THIS EVENING FOR THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY, NEW YORK CITY, LONG ISLAND AND NORTHEASTERN NEW JERSEY...

AFFECTED AREA...Western Passaic, Eastern Passaic, Hudson, Western Bergen, Eastern Bergen, Western Essex, Eastern Essex, Western Union, Eastern Union, Lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island.

WINDS...Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 25 percent.
TEMPERATURES...Around 60.
LIGHTNING...None.

IMPACTS...Rapid fire spread if ignition occurs.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected or occurring. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels will create a significantly elevated fire growth potential.

Swan Lake is one of the latest in season cases to be confirmed in NYS, the first HAB confirmed in this Westchester water body reported five days ago. Otisco Lake is back on the active HAB list with 2 locations in bloom this late in the season. Thirty-two HABs remain throughout NYS, 13 of these are in a single Orange County water body struggling with drought, Beaver Dam Lake. Canandaigua Lake of the Finger Lakes is hosting eight active blooms. All reports more than two weeks old are automatically archived, the season count for 2024 sits at 2103 aged reports and 32 active blooms. This eclipses last year's season with less than 1200 bluegreen mats confirmed statewide.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Montgomery County: Nelliston Village Water Works announced a planned service outage this past Wednesday for maintenance. A system-wide BWA applies from resumption of water service until further notice. Nelliston Village WW serves a residential population of 535 from surface water source purchased from another licensed drinking water facility in Montgomery County. The permit under which Nelliston WW operates is noted with no violations, no issues of non-compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Tropical Storm Advisory 11A issued by NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 6 am EST Sat Nov 16 2024

SARA STILL STATIONARY...TORRENTIAL RAINFALL WITH LIFE-THREATENING FLOODING AND MUDSLIDES FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA

At 600 AM CST (1200 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Sara was located near latitude 16.1 North, longitude 86.3 West, 25 miles SE of Isle of Roatan, Honduras 150 miles SE of Belize City. Sara is nearly stationary. A slow west-northwestward motion is forecast to begin late today, with a faster motion toward the west-northwest and northwest expected on Sunday and Sunday night. On the forecast track, the center of Sara will continue to move near the northern coast of Honduras during the next day or so before approaching Belize, and then move onshore in Belize during the day on Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is likely today. Slight strengthening is possible tonight and Sunday before landfall in Belize, with weakening expected after landfall. Sara is expected to dissipate Sunday night or Monday as it crosses the southern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 999 mb (29.50 inches).

  • A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. Interests elsewhere in the Yucatan Peninsula should monitor the progress of this system. For storm information specific to your area, please monitor products issued by your national meteorological service.

    RAINFALL: Through early next week, rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 inches with isolated storm totals around 35 inches area expected over northern Honduras. This rainfall will lead to widespread areas of life-threatening and potentially catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides, especially along and near the Sierra La Esperanza.

    Elsewhere across the rest of Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala, western Nicaragua, and the Mexican State of Quintana Roo, Tropical Storm Sara is expected to produce 5 to 10 inches of rain with localized totals around 15 inches through early next week. This will result in areas of flash flooding, perhaps significant, along with the potential of mudslides.

    WIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area in Honduras through tonight. Tropical storm conditions are expected in Guatemala, Belize, and portions of Mexico beginning later today.

    STORM SURGE: Storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above normal tide levels along the immediate coast in areas of onshore winds along the northern coast of Honduras. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. A storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 1 to 3 feet above ground level near and to the north of where the center of Sara crosses the coast of Belize.
