Drought relief, heavy rain forecast for NYC tonight

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in NYS
Drought relief is on the way, New York City, the National Weather Service forecast for today includes clouds, high 57 with showers and heavy rain tonight. The streamflow dashboard remains the same as reported yesterday, much below seasonal normal statewide with extreme low flows in central, south and northeast drainage basins. Finger Lakes watershed has a few stations reported normal water levels, Long Island is still recording some normal levels in the monitored creeks.

The drought map has not changed much overnight, extreme drought remains in Upper Lake Champlain watershed in the northeast drainage basin, impacting north Washington and southeast Essex Counties. Adjacent area in the Upper Hudson River watershed of the central drainage basin remains is in severe drought from south Washington County, north Rensselaer, Saratoga, south Hamilton Counties. Lower Hudson River retains the severe drought rating through Ulster and Orange Counties, the remaining surface area at moderate drought. In the south drainage basin, severe drought has gripped more area of Susquehanna River watershed. Chemung River watershed is rated moderate drought. In the northwest drainage basin, Niagara River -Lake Erie watershed west section, Niagara-Orleans-west Monroe Counties has stepped down from severe to moderate drought overnight. Right back around to the northeast, severe drought continues for St. Lawrence River watershed along Raquette River channel. Lake Ontario minor tributaries east section is rated severe midweek, the adjacent area of northeast watersheds not rated severe drought are rated moderate drought.

The counties of Putnam and Westchester are the only areas unrated in the central basin. In the west, the majority of area is rated below normal with the Finger Lakes watershed unrated.

NYS DEC HABs monitoring season has officially come to a close. Twenty-seven active HABs were left on the notifications board at the close of the season. The latest reports came in November 15, these for Lower St Regis Lake and Upper Saranac Lake. Reports made prior to Nov 5 have been archived, the total reports for the season number 2139.
