Heavy rain in NYC

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in NYS
Heavy rain coming down in NYC this hour, 49 degrees. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch with higher amounts possible with thunderstorms later today. Temperature dropping to around 46 by 5pm, northeast wind 14 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Rain will continue, the chance of precipitation set at 90% until 10 pm with three quarters to one inch possible. Cloudy overnight with a low around 40. Southwest wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70% overnight with a quarter to half of an inch more rainfall possible.

Streamflows are starting to pick up in south Westchester and Rockland Counties following heavy rain overnight. On Long Island the creeks are filling, Cold Spring Brook is running 96th percentile in Suffolk County. Upstate, the flow volume remains at historic low values with record lows set in Upper Hudson River watershed, Hudson River at Hadley and Batten Kill near the mill at Battenville also at the lowest levels for this date in water recording history.

Moderate to severe drought persists statewide with one watershed in extreme drought conditions. Upper Lake Champlain watershed remains extremely dry in north Washington and east Essex counties. The east side of the state remains in moderate to severe drought from north to south. One small area remains unrated, Putnam and north Westchester Counties in the central drainage basin, drinking water source for NYC flow values likely propped up with controlled releases from the dams. In the west, the landscape is mostly below normal with moderate drought in Lake Ontario minor tributaries west section, running south through the mid-section of the Genesee River watershed and all of Chemung River watershed. Remaining watersheds of the west are rated below normal with the exception of the Finger Lakes region, unrated.

See the red-brown tags on the map for extreme low flow, 1st percentile values in the USGS network.

WT HAB Tracker from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science early detection program, NYS DEC HABs Notifications
NYS DEC ground-based HAB monitoring season has officially come to a close. Twenty-seven HABs were left on the notifications board at the close of the season . The latest reports came in November 15 for Lower St Regis Lake and Upper Saranac Lake. All reports have been transferred to the archive files for 2024, the preliminary total at 2139. As DEC compiles the records for the year, an annual summary will be generated. In the meantime, see our own compilation report, based on our daily observation and running tally of the records submitted and confirmed.

See our final HAB report for the 2024 season, including an alphabetical list of the impacted water bodies, the date of first appearance of bluegreen confirmed and the total HABs for the water body this year, here.
