Rain, and more rain on the way

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS monitoring sites in NYS
Light rain with mist/fog in New York City Tuesday, 55 degrees. Clearing tonight, clouds gathering again tomorrow for guaranteed rain on Thanksgiving Day Thursday, up to three-quarters of an inch new precipitation expected.

The rain has delivered drought relief throughout NYS, the west and north upstate areas have been refreshed with just one area maintaining a moderate drought rating in the St Lawrence River watershed, the Raquette River cutting through St Lawrence County has been lower than seasonal normal long enough to cast the immediate channel landscape into persistent drought.

The central drainage basin gathers surface runoff to the creeks and tributaries of the Hudson River on the way to Long Island Sound. The Lower Hudson remains below normal, adjacent Delaware River remains in the southeast Delaware County. Upper Lake Champlain watershed remains in severe drought Tuesday, the dry conditions impacting north Washington and east Essex Counties. Allegheny River watershed is off the drought map today, Chemung and Susquehanna remain rated below normal. The drought map displays watershed areas in degrees of hydrologic poverty by comparing 7-day average streamflow values against historic average streamflow for the season.

WT HAB Tracker from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science early detection program
The latest upload of Lake Champlain is dated November 25, a partially cloud obscured image with no HAB activity observed between clouds. The early detection program for HABs from satellite monitoring indicates where State and local authorities may want to sample the water and post beach advisories for detected cyanotoxins, harmful to swimmers and waders, anyone coming in contact with cyanobacteria can be impacted with skin and gastrointestinal symptoms. The toxins damage vital organs, most common microcystins affects the liver. Dogs are especially sensitive to this toxin, testing and posting the impacted water is critical to public safety.

See our final HAB report for the 2024 season, including an alphabetical list of the impacted water bodies, the date of first appearance of bluegreen confirmed and the total HABs for the water body this year, here.

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Onondaga County: Part of the Town of Elbridge along with Elbridge Village and Village of Jordan were under a boil water order over the weekend after County Health determined an issue of inadequate disinfection in the municipal water system. Private wells are not affected.
