Village of Fonda system-wide BWA

Safe Drinking Water Advisories
Montgomery County: Fonda (V) Water Works and Village of Fonda have been placed on a system-wide boil water order for high turbidity and inadequate chlorination. Turbidity is suspended particles that can host microbiological contamination. Turbidity combined with low chlorine is a double whammy, it is important to observe the BWA until further notice.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that boiled tap water or bottled water be used for the following:
  • Drinking
  • Washing dishes
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Washing or preparing food
  • Washing your hands
  • Making ice
  • Making baby formula
The complete CDC guidance can be found here.

Fonda Water Works serves 1080 people from a surface water source in the Mohawk River watershed. See the yellow tag on the map to the right for the location.

Chemung County: Millport Village Water Supply has issued a BWA after a leak dropped water level in the storage tank below the safe maintenance level. The BWA will remain until further notice. Millport Village Water Supply serves 292 people from a groundwater source in the Chemung River watershed. This watershed has been drought stressed for an extended period. Rains this week are refilling the surface water bodies, however the groundwater aquifers will take more time to recover.

Flooding in NYS this morning, in the south drainage basin, Susquehanna River overflowing at Conklin in Broome County as of 1 am this morning, currently running half a foot over the channel on a level flow trajectory. West Branch Delaware River starting to spill out at Walton midafternoon yesterday, peaking more than two feet over flood stage early this morning, currently on the decline, less than two feet over at this report. In the Lake Champlain basin in the northeast, Mettawee River got to flooding near Middle Granville just after 11 pm last night. Flow near Middle Granville peaked at 445 am around 7 inches over the channel, this one should be back in the channel by the this report goes up.

Wednesday's rains have topped up the watersheds statewide, the current dashboard shows much above seasonal normal to high water levels in all four drainage basins. According to NWS, "Rivers will crest this morning after a widespread 1.50 to 3.00 inches of rain was observed Wednesday and this morning. A lake effect snow band will bring snow accumulations up to 14 inches will be possible, mainly near and along NY State Route 3 in the vicinity of Star Lake, Cranberry Lake, and Tupper Lake. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will lead to areas of blowing snow and difficult travel."

See the blue tags on the map indicating 99th percentile high flows, black tags will be added as flood stage is breached. Flood alerts have gone out to subscribers within 25 miles of the high flow sites, sign up for alerts at the "Call Us" link on the top left of the page.
