Up to an inch of snow for NYC
Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS river monitors in NY
Overcast, 30 degrees in the city on the first back to work Monday of the new year. Light snow is likely, a 70% chance of new snowfall, up to an inch coming down before 2pm. Cloudy and 31 all day with the north wind giving the impression of 20 to 25 degrees. The west is overcast and colder, 20 degrees now with the daytime high 26 expected, a slight chance of snow before 1pm. Tonight, another slight chance of snow showers after 10pm with wind gusts to 20 mph. Upstate north, Massena International - Richards Field is registering negative temp this morning, -3 degrees with snow showers likely tonight after 3 am, up to an inch of accumulation is possible.
Streamflows are down across the dashboard Monday, seasonal normal in the west, south and central drainage basins to above seasonal normal in the north. Nothing recorded above the 90th percentile, no extreme high or low flows observed. The drought map seems to have a long term grip on Putnam and north Westchester, this area downstream of New Croton dam in the Lower Hudson River watershed has been in moderate drought for months. No other area of NYS is marked on the drought map.
The central drainage basin is home to 15 million New York residents, with industry that relies on abundant fresh water supply. See our prior report, an example of streambed erosion impacting an important drinking water reservoir, here.
