NWS issues wind advisory for NYC and Long Island

WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM EST THIS EVENING...

Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph in portions of southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and southeast New York. Strong winds will result in some downed tree limbs and a few power outages may result. Unsecured objects will be blown around and/or damaged.

Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Secure outdoor objects.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM TONIGHT...

Snow. Additional snow accumulations up to 1 to 4 inches. Winds gusting 30 to 35 mph.

Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. Cold wind chill values of 0 to 15 below zero are expected through this morning. If venturing outdoors, add layers and avoid any exposed skin.

If you must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a hat will keep you from losing your body heat.

Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.

Impacting Northern St. Lawrence-Northern Franklin-Southeastern St. Lawrence-Southern Franklin-Western Clinton-Western Franklin-Lamoille- Eastern Franklin-Eastern Chittenden Counties in NY and VT, including the cities of Dannemora, Enosburg Falls, Richford, Saranac Lake, Norfolk, Massena, Ellenburg, Underhill, Johnson, Star Lake, Malone, Tupper Lake, Fort Covington, Stowe, Richmond, Swanton, South Colton, and St. Albans

Streamflow Situation from the network of USGS river monitors in NY

Fair and 24 degrees in the city with a high expected 32 in the sun with a high wind advisory in effect. Lightly snowing out west, 13 degrees, the anticipated high 21. Snow showers are likely, up to half an inch before noon, with blustery conditions blowing snow around in places. Northwest wind gusts as high as 38 mph will create a wind chill value 0 degrees. A slight chance of snow showers again before midnight tonight, Wind chill values as low as zero overnight. Upstate north, Massena International - Richards Field reports 8 degrees, the high today up to 19 with winter weather advisory in force.

Streamflows are becoming lower in the southeast, the common rating for Lower Hudson River watershed is now much below seasonal normal; elsewhere in NYS water levels remain at seasonal normal. The drought map retains Putnam and north Westchester in moderate drought with adjacent surface area in south Westchester rated below normal. There are no active floods, nor extreme high or low flows to report.
