    • regional economic impact is $2.9 billion annually, supporting 60,000 jobs

Several Finger Lakes are noted on the New York State Section 303(d) List of Impaired/TMDL Waters, meaning the lakes are not fully supporting appropriate uses and therefore subject to management planning efforts.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) is engaged in developing Total Maximum Daily Load plans for Cayuga Lake, and a Nine Element Watershed plan for Owasco Lake. These plans will identify and quantify sources of pollutants, determine the water quality goal(s) or target(s) and the pollutant reductions required, with best management practices (BMPs) required to improve water quality.

High Flow: none reported in the high range

    HABs Report:

July 24/21 Cayuga Lake, fifteen new blooms are reported this week, up from twenty sites confirmed last week, bringing the total HABs to 35 on this lake.

Check local beach conditions, localized blooms occurring on east and west side all the way down the length of the lake. WTNY spoke with Judy Wright, the Agriculture Resource Educator for Seneca County, a position funded in part by the Cornell Cooperative Extension division.

Judy spoke with WTNY about success and challenges of cooperating with many stakeholders to protect NYS water quality.

“Since we started speaking a common language (farmers, cottagers, technicians and watershed managers), the communication and relationships are more positive, and everyone is really working together to address water quality. Phosphate loading was much higher years ago than it is today, farmers have adopted best management practises to reduce nutrient leaching, the cottage owners have contributed with upgraded septic systems. What we are learning about the HABs blooms today is that invasive species are playing a role.” WTNY will track efforts to combat invasives in upcoming reports.
